Friendship Store

The Friendship Store has several locations all over the city and was initially started in the 1960s. One can find a huge variety of Chinese craft, silks and other artistic merchandise. Jewelry pieces, lovely cloisonné, batik and silk clothing, furniture, vases, carpets, linen and much more can be found all under one roof.

Recently, it has modified itself to include a number of imported food items and outlets such as Starbucks. The Beijing Friendship Store has been officially declared as the retail provider for the 2008 Olympic Games. This chain was started in the late 50s as a sign of friendship between the Chinese and foreigners when China first opened to the outside world. Originally, it was open only to foreigners and has stayed off limits to ordinary Chinese until the 1990s. But for diplomats, visiting dignitaries, and intrepid tourists.
