Suzhou, Half an Hour Away: Classical Gardens, Pingjiang Canals, and Why You Should Stay Overnight
Classical pavilions and Taihu scholar stones in Suzhou, 28 minutes from Shanghai.
THE VERDICT
How to Go: Take a 28-minute high-speed train from Shanghai Station or Hongqiao to “Suzhou Station” (苏州站—right on the edge of the Old Town, NOT Suzhou North). Stay one night so you can visit Master of the Nets Garden at night and enter Humble Administrator’s Garden at 7:30 A.M. sharp before tour groups arrive.

For centuries, Shanghai and Suzhou have divided the labor of Jiangnan civilization: Shanghai handled the skyline, global trade, and neon ambition, while Suzhou perfected the scholar’s rock, Kunqu opera, silk embroidery, and bowls of noodles topped with river-shrimp roe.

Skip the rushed day-trip bus. Checking into a canal-side courtyard hotel for one night lets you experience Master of the Nets Garden under lantern light with live Kunqu opera after the day-trippers have boarded their trains back to Shanghai.
